Go to the Hell

There are things that will never change. The whole world could change – religions, cultures, ideas, money – but some certainties always remain the same. Like the fact that Valentine's Day will always come every year, and every year you'll give a wonderful present to a special someone, a special someone who next year won't be with you anymore. Maybe. It was the seventh year that you received presents on Valentine's Day by Arthur Kirkland; at first nameless, then with a short and shy signature, but always asking you to not reply with words nor other presents. But that year you were sure: you would break the rule. You were going to give Arthur a present before he gave his to you, and it wouldn't be something common; it would be something special, something unique, something fantastic, something…
A sudden noise diverted your attention: Francis burst open the door and stared at you with his intense eyes. He was pale, his blond hair were strangely messy and his beautiful face was drawn, as if he cried all the night. His blue eyes were full of fear, anger and despair.  [Name]… Angl… Anglaterre is… - he eventually whispered with a voice that made you stand up and follow him at once.
Arthur didn't look sick; he just looked tired, as after a long travel. Crouched in a corner, with closed eyes and his head leaned against the wall, he really looked asleep. But his skin pale and cold like a stone and his mouth, still wet, opened like for whispering his last words betrayed him.
You collapsed, unable to stand that sight anymore, feeling like someone stuck a knife in your stomach.
Francis bowed beside you and gave you a necklace. – He had this in his hand… I think that it belongs to you – he whispered with trembling voice. You gripped the necklace, trying to reject your tears. He hugged you tight, whispering: - Ma cherì, I know this is hard for you but I want you to do something for me… Go to the church and pray.
You looked at him surprised. – What? But I never go to church!
- I know, but… I had a dream. Trust me, oui?
- No, Francis, you don't understand… I loved him, don't make fun of me.
- Why would I make fun of you? – The man replied with a weak smile. – I loved him too. Go to church, please. I know it will work.
You eventually gave up and few minutes later you were in the white building, with the heart ripped and the mind totally blank. – Why did you kill him? – You eventually said to God. – I mean, I know it was a suicide, but you could stop him. It's your fault. Why? He was a good boy! What will I do now? I can't bring him back to life.
- But you can, if you want – a voice replied behind you. You turned to see a very young boy with wise eyes. He had a long blond plait and a pair of big wings. – I'm sorry, I'd love to have a more showy entrance, but the sparkles feature is run-down – he explained. – God apologizes for losing sight of that boy and asks you to pick up him from the hell, or the heaven or wherever he is.
- What? Me?! Why me? – you exclaimed stunned.
- Because he would never listen to me. Don't worry, it's simple. Jesus will give you a pass.
- And how?
- It will be a quick trip. Just close you eyes. – You were still sceptical, but you closed your eyes and you felt warmth surrounding you. The angel touched your shoulder and you opened your eyes, but you had to blink a few times before you realized you weren't dreaming. The sky was light blue with no clouds, because all the clouds were under you, as a soft floor. You were afraid of falling down, but they were curiously resistant. Lots of angels flew all around: reading, talking to each other, listening to rock music. Other human people – saints and blessed – cheered them and smiled at each other. A big building, right in the middle of the sky, was surrounded by flowers. – It God and Jesus' house – the angel whispered, opening the door. The walls were tall and white. There was silence, but you could hear in the distance children's laughs. There was no gold, no silver, nothing precious nor frills. The angel took you in front of a blue door. You could hear noise, but you knocked softly and someone opened the door. A young man with long, brown hair was listening to music with an iPod in the middle of the room, humming with closed eyes. – Master, you have a guest. That girl who have to bring that boy back to life – The angel shouted. Jesus opened his eyes and smiled, turning off the iPod. – Hi, sister! Nice to meet you! Man, it was a long time I didn't talk to humans. So you have to bring back to life a boy? I'm sorry, daddy has a lot of things to do and sometimes he loses someone. Anyways, where do you think he is? Heaven, purgatory or hell?
- Heaven – you answered unfalteringly.
- Good. But in case you're wrong, I'll give you a complete pass. You can go to heaven, purgatory and hell but bring back only one person. Good luck! The heaven is there, follow the road signs.
With the pass in your pocket, you knocked at the heaven's door. It was magnificent: a beautiful place with everything you wished, and peace, wonderful peace. Children played cute games, boys and men talked about real life and the old men read peacefully, while women sang with the angels. A old-looking man was working on a computer; when he saw you he smiled friendly. – Problems, miss?
- I have to bring back a person – you explained showing the pass. – Oh, I see – the other said. – What's his or her name?
- Arthur Kirkland, please. He committed suicide this morning.
He checked a list on his computer. – Sorry, he's not here – he eventually replied. – I mean, he's dead but he's not in heaven. Suicide people rarely reach this place.
- Oh. So now I have to go to the purgatory.
- Yes, but… look, better if you go right to the hell. In the purgatory everything is so slow, you could take ages, literally. And he's surely in the hell likelihood.
- Okay, thanks. And… - You added after few moments. – Another question. Do you know where a certain "Holy Roman Empire" is?
- Um, let me see… - he checked again the long list. – He's not dead. He's still alive, but he has a bad amnesia. I'm not sure if he remembers a lot. Sorry, I don't know more.
- That's enough, thanks. How can I go to the hell?
- Speak to someone nervous and he'll surely send you there.
You stared at him blankly.
- Okay, okay, just joking! There's an elevator there. Use that.
In the elevator there were only few buttons. There was one for the purgatory, one for the Earth and one for the hell. You pushed the "Hell" button, and it began to go down, while a hidden radio sang "Who wants to live forever" by Freddie Mercury.
Finally the elevator opened the doors. The hell wasn't nice like the heaven, but it didn't looked so bad at first sight: a dark, tall ceiling obscured the place but some cold wood fires lightened it. There was only a infinite grassland all around and a far sea at West. Seven gigantic houses caught your look: someone lived there, and it seemed to be a lot of people. You trembled. The air was so cold, and that place made you feel strange… you felt afraid. You knew it was better if you left soon. You were distracted by a man who called you. He was behind a desk with a computer and he was hot… although he looked disappointed. – Hey, you're not dead. What are you doing here? – he asked.
- Well, err, I'm here for bringing back a boy to life – you managed to say. "Why I have to go to the hell to find such hot boys" you thought.
- I see. Have you got the pass? – You showed it to him. – Perfect – He replied. – What's his name.
- Arthur Kirkland.
He checked another list on the computer. – Dead this morning, suicide?
- Yeah.
He looked back to you. – Do you see that houses? Well, they're the Seven Deadly Sins. Your boy is in the Rage one.
"Of course" you thought, walking towards the big house. You could hear a lot of noise. When you opened the door, you saw a incredible crowd of men and women of all ages fighting for no reasons. You were afraid to not find Arthur, but you recognized his big eyebrows. – ARTHUR! – You shouted, but he didn't hear you. You made your way between the crowd and finally reached him. He looked like the day before he died, but he was more… transparent. When he saw you he nearly died again. – [NAME]?! What are you doing here? Why did you die!
- Arthur, listen… I'm not dead. I'm only here to bring you back to life.
- Bring me back? And why? I chose to die by myself.
You couldn't hear him properly, so you took him out from the house.
- Why are you here, return to your world – he said.
- Not without you! Why did you poisoned yourself? – You replied.
He sighed. – I'm tired, [Name]. Tired of this life. All things are getting worse day by day, and it looks like everything I do doesn't works or makes all even worse. There's no meaning in my life. All I want is to stay here by myself, in peace.
- In peace?! You call this "peace"? You really want to remain here? – You pointed the "Rage" house. – You're smart, you can see this is not a good life. Come back with me. I know it is difficult, but you can still change things. Together we can survive and have a better life. Better than living for eternity in a house full of crazy people.
He stared at you with his beautiful green eyes. Then he nodded. – You're right, but we can't escape from hell.
- Who needs to escape? – You smiled. The man of the computer waved at you and Arthur glared at him. He glared at the elevator too, suspicious of everything in that strange world. You calmed him down and pushed the "Earth" button. In few seconds you were again in the church where you met the angel. You took the pass in your hands, but it turned in golden dust.
- [Name]… thank you – he whispered with a sigh. Now he wasn't transparent anymore.
- Don't worry, but don't do it again – you smiled kissing him on the cheek.
You walked towards Arthur's house. You knocked the door and Francis opened the door. When he saw you, his eyes sparkled and he laughed hugging you tightly. – Oh, [Name]! Finally you're here! You don't know how I were worried! First Arthur dies, then you disappear, then Arthur's body disapp-- - He stopped when he saw the Brit staring at him. – Arthur, damn you. Why you always come alive again? – he said with a fake reproachful tone. You could see he was the happiest person of the world.
- Don't be so rude, frog, [Name] told me you were crying – the other replied.
- That was because I want to be the one to kill you, lapin – the Frenchman laughed hugging him brotherly, and for once Arthur let the frog hug him.
- You know what day it is today, Arthur? – he whispered.
- The day when the idiots come back to life? – he chuckled.
- No, Anglaterre, it's Valentine's Day.
- Right – he smiled grabbing your hand. – Happy Valentine's Day to everyone who is still alive and can enjoy the love of the world, because the world always have free love to give at beloved, unloved and loved-without-they-know.
Okay, I know, I'm bad at titles.
